The architecture of the temple is basically Vijayanagara Style with some influences of Chalukya and Chola. The Main entrances with Gopurams are on South, West and also on North.

The unfinished North Temple Tower has the most intricate sculptures. Shiva Purana is depicted on the walls of the Gopuram with some episodes of the Ramayana and the Mahabharatha are really a feast to eyes.

Ramalingeswara Swamy (Shiva) is the presiding deity of the temple.

As water always flow (‘Bugga’ in Telugu) on the Lingam into the sanctum sanctorum from a perennial underground stream, the temple got this name ‘Bugga Ramalingeswara Temple’.

PERIOD : This colossal temple was built between 1490 and 1509 by Ramalinga Nayudu of the Vijayanagara Dynasty. During Islamic invasions, many sculptures of the temple were defaced and plundered.

Later it was restored by Thomas Monroe and opened to the public in 1800 under the British rule.
